SOUTHERN BRANCH SECRETARY'S REPORT

Report for the 2009 Annual Report, published April 2010

Branch meetings were held at Great Hampton in February and at Birlingham in October. The June meeting at Middle Littleton lacked a quorum and no business was conducted. We appreciated the warm hospitality extended to us at all three locations. Seven new members were elected at these meetings. At our October AGM, Caroline Evans replaced Alan Hartley as Deputy Ringing Master, Thelma James took over from Pearl Gibson as Treasurer, and Roland Merrick joined the committee. All other officers continued in their posts.

The monthly practices continue to be well supported. A number of our ringers enjoyed a successful year, with a good number of personal firsts being scored. Quite often these are the same ringers who turn out for the monthly practices. The practices are scheduled around the branch to give everyone a chance to attend. As ringers of all levels are welcome, please consider joining us.

Our branch striking competition in June was held at Great Comberton. Pershore came first and Great Comberton second. In October, we had the opportunity to host the association inter-branch striking competition. This took place at Pebworth. The Southern Branch achieved second place in the 6 bell, 8 bell & 10 bell competitions. Congratulations and thank you to all those who represented us so well.

On the more social side of our activities, our annual dinner in March returned to the Evesham Golf Club for a lovely evening. Delicious food, good drink, convivial company and handbells joined together to please everyone. In September, the annual outing saw 22 ringers travel to Bristol by train. The day was blessed with fine weather, an interesting mix of towers, and much camaraderie.

On balance, it has been a rewarding year. What would make it even better is if every member would make just a bit more effort to take part in the many available events. On behalf of your officers, especially myself, thank you for your support and generosity that makes our work succeed.
