Ripple, St Mary

The Tower is 76 feet high. An original steeple was struck by lightning in 1583 with repairs finally made in 1713.
The steeple was not replaced. The tower was raised to make space for a new bell chamber and further heightened in 1797.
The Tower has a ring of six Bells in the key of F sharp, hung in 1808 by John Rudhall of Gloucester, replacing 6 Rudhall bells dated 1705. One is inscribed “Prosperity to this Parish”, another “Peace and Good Neighbourhood”. Each bell weighs 5 to 12cwt.

They were retuned by John Taylor of Loughborough in 1922 and a new bell frame installed. Two earlier frames remain and suggest there were 5 bells in medieval times and 4 bells by 1552.
Bell ringing records go back to 1714. The first full peal is believed to have been rung by local ringers in 1934 comprising 5040 changes requiring continuous ringing for 3 hours. Full peals are still rung to mark important dates.
A clock was added to the Tower in 1815 but there is evidence of a clock from as early as 1705. A new clock by Thomas Hartley of Shillingford was installed in 1924. It strikes the quarter hour on Bells 2 and 4 and the hour on the Tenor.
The roof is inaccessible to the public for safety reasons.
